Adding £1 ingredient to shampoo will help your hair grow back, doctor says

If you're finding it hard to grow your hair, a doctor has revealed the one change you need to make to your hair washing routine.

Hair loss and lack of growth can be incredibly frustrating, with countless products on the market promising to help - but where should you begin? Dr Janine Bowring suggests that adding a teaspoon of coffee to your shampoo could do wonders for hair growth.

The most common type of hair loss in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia, also known as AGA. "In men, it's called male pattern baldness, and in women, it's female pattern hair loss," she clarified on TikTok.

She noted that it "usually starts with the temple area" in men, and "over time that hairline recedes to form that characteristic 'M' shape". The hair also "thins on top of the head", and in women, the hair loss typically occurs "at the top of the head" where the hair gradually becomes "more and more sparse".

She stated: "So, caffeine has been proven to help with that hair growth," and she displayed a study on the screen that supported the claims. "My tip here is to add just a teaspoon of ground coffee into your shampoo when you're shampooing your hair, and then wash it out," she advised.

Dr Bowring then warned that "it will make the hair a little bit darker", so it would work "best for dark hair". You can expect to pay around £1 for a basic jar of instant coffee from your local supermarket, but branded products may be slightly pricier.

In the comments, someone asked: "Do you put it inside the shampoo bottle or on your hand with the shampoo to wash your hair? " Dr Bowring said: "You can put it in your hand with the shampoo".

Another person on a hair growth journey added: "I put rosemary essential oil in my shampoo, and my hair is coming back. I'll have to try the coffee too. Thank you!!"
